MetroFax earns our "TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award" for its highly competitive pricing structure. Its Personal/ Small Business plan, which is only $12.95 per month for up to 1000 sent/received fax pages, offers more than other faxing services. Another great benefit of this service is that it only charges three cents for over the limit pages; this is a great bargain considering many online fax services charge up to 10 cents per page.
This fax service is simple to set up and you can send faxes from your PC, cell phone or web-based dashboard from any computer, including a Mac. It works with Gmail, Outlook and other Microsoft Office applications and you can even send from the print command in FireFox.
Standout Features:
MetroFax offers a good set of basic features at a great price. You can send and receive faxes from anywhere in the US or Canada without long distance fees and you can receive from MetroFax your own dedicated fax phone number. This fax service offers toll free numbers for only another $2/month. They also offer local numbers, and will even let you bring your current number with you, so you don't have to notify customers and colleagues of a number change, and you won't have to change your business cards!
We liked that MetroFax works with many different types of files including Microsoft Word 95-2007 files types, Lotus Word, Excel, Quattro Pro, CSV files, PDFs and PowerPoint files. It also supports a variety of images files such as BMP, PSD, GIF, JPEG and TIFFs. In terms of the text in the body or cover letter of the fax it can be sent as plain text or HTML and can be received as a PDF or TIFF. The other files types mentioned are the files types supported in terms of attachments.
We would have liked to see more security options in the basic package. Generally speaking this service relies on the user to backup and organize sent and received faxes.
We found most of the fax tools provided by MetroFax easy to use and install. We had zero problems sending faxes through the MetroFax Printer or the dashboard. However, we did have a problem getting the fax print command to install onto our Outlook toolbar; we tried several times but failed to get it to work. But you can work around this by configuring Outlook to use MetroFax to send faxes. We also didn’t like that you have to set the fax profile, this seems like something that could be set up automatically instead of manually.
MetroFax offers toll-free telephone and email support. Online they post a demo and a few FAQS and Tips. But the online support information is extremely limited; we would like to see much more information posted online and 24/7 support.
This is where MetroFax beats the competition, though it charges a set up fee and the monthly price is a bit more, its page limit is much higher and their over the limit fee much lower. So if you are the type that is never quite sure how many pages you need to send and receive per month, MetroFax could be a good option for you.
They also offer corporate level fax services but you have to call them for a quote based on your businesses unique requirements. The corporate service offers increased security and a dedicated fax number for every included employee.
MetroFax offers good, basic online fax services at a great price. You can send faxes from almost anywhere using MetroFax even from your cell phone, PDA or Mac. There are only a few things we would like to see improved with this service, firstly it would be nice if they offered vanity and local numbers, secondly better reporting and lastly increased help and support information posted online.
